The local chemical environment of Nd3+, Eu3+, and Er3+ luminescent centers in various lead germanate glasses has been investigated by means of extended x-ray absorption fine structure at the Ln L-III edges. The main result of this investigation is that for all the Ln(3+) ions the first coordination sphere is more symmetrical in glasses with high lead concentration than in glasses with low Pb content. This result is compatible with differential scanning calorimetry measurements and enlightens previous luminescence investigations carried out by some of the present authors.

Abstract
The local chemical environment of Nd3+, Eu3+, and Er3+ luminescent centers in various lead germanate glasses has been investigated by means of extended x-ray absorption fine structure at the Ln L-III edges. The main result of this investigation is that for all the Ln(3+) ions the first coordination sphere is more symmetrical in glasses with high lead concentration than in glasses with low Pb content. This result is compatible with differential scanning calorimetry measurements and enlightens previous luminescence investigations carried out by some of the present authors.File in questo prodotto:
