During his life, Michel Foucault was interpreted by some of his critics as a Marxist, as an anti-Marxist and even as an anarchic thinker; these days however, some of his interpreters consider him to be a new-liberal thinker. The article takes into exam the courses Foucault gave at the Collège de France in 1977-1978 and 1978-1979, and claims that they do not contain an apology of liberalism, but rather a deconstruction of liberal "governmentality" and biopolitics.

Abstract

During his life, Michel Foucault was interpreted by some of his critics as a Marxist, as an anti-Marxist and even as an anarchic thinker; these days however, some of his interpreters consider him to be a new-liberal thinker. The article takes into exam the courses Foucault gave at the Collège de France in 1977-1978 and 1978-1979, and claims that they do not contain an apology of liberalism, but rather a deconstruction of liberal "governmentality" and biopolitics.
