Anthony Huish is an unknown 17th-century English scholar who wrote Priscianus Nascens (1660) and Priscianus Ephebus (1668), two textbooks published to exhibit and exemplify by means of rules of translation the basic features of Latin syntax given by William Lily in his grammar. Such rules are complemented by a number of syntactical and lexical indexes and by a small dictionary. While acknowledging the indisputable importance of such a textbook in order to acquire a better understanding of the development of grammar and translation theory in England, the present study focuses on Huish’s indexes and dictionary and is divided into three parts, the first one dealing with the indexes provided in Priscianus Nascens, the second one with the indexes of Priscianus Ephebus and finally in the third part I analyse the dictionary appended to Priscianus Ephebus, so as to highlight any possible similarities or differences with the previous indexes, but also and mostly to gain a more comprehensive assessment of English lexicographic tradition.
