The authors examine the most important aetiological hypotheses about the pulmonary sequestrations and find that none of them can satisfactorily explain all the different types of this anomaly. Therefore, they surmise that the real source of the pulmonary sequestrations lie in the composition and development of the endothoracic septa, particularly in the closure of the pleuropericardial and pleuroperitoneal orifices, which occurs at the end of the second month of intrauterine life. This hypothesis would satisfactorily explain all types of pulmonary seqyestration (vascular an parenchymal types) and even its frequent coexistence with other intrathoracic congenital defects.
