Abstract A total of 94 Solanum accessions, includingeggplants and related species, were morphologicallycharacterized based on greenhouse observations, andmolecularly analysed by the AFLP technique. Morphologicalparameters were helpful in assessing similaritiesor differences among accessions, and molecular data wereused to support morphological conclusions. A dendrogramwas computed based on the Dice genetic distancesusing the neighbour-joining method. The analysis wasefficient in the assignment of a species name for eight outof nine accessions that were not previously classified, andrevealed that 14 further accessions were misnamed in thecollection originally received. The results indicate that thetaxonomy of Solanum sections and subgenera includingseveral species should be reconsidered. The AFLPtechnique was revealed as an efficient tool in determininggenetic relationships among species. In general, morphologicalobservations were consistent with molecular data, indicating that both approaches complemented to definethe phylogenetic status of a large genus like Solanum. Interms of eggplant breeding, the molecular analysis of theMelongena complex, and of the other sections of thesubgenus Leptostemonum, establishes useful germplasmrelationships in the gene pool available for the geneticimprovement of the cultivated species. The results wehave provided highlight an urgent necessity to includemolecular parameters in handling and characterizing thegenebank-deposited germplasm related to cultivatedcrops.
