Reports on a case in which amnesia lasted 11 days and was characterized by loss of identity and personal recall following a fugue state. After a discussion of the classification of dissociative reactions, the clinical examinations and the course of the illness are reported together with the problems of differential diagnosis and treatment. The results of a psychodiagnostic investigation (achievement tests and projective devices), motivational analysis, and existential-phenomenological analysis are summarized. The patient's personality is described as a manifestation of passive-dependency and hysteria. The defense mechanisms used and the unconscious gains of the illness are interpreted in psychoanalytical terms. (72 ref) ((c) 1997 APA/PsycINFO, all rights reserved)
