Presents data from psychological and psychiatric consultations made at the University of Verona Teaching Hospital, Service of Medical Psychology over 5 yrs (1979-2983). Most of the patients referred from other medical departments were neurotics (38%). 10% included psychotics, 9.8% included psychosomatics, and 7.2% included drug addicts and alcoholics. The percentage of ward referrals classified as unspecified, which remained fairly constant over the 1st 4 yrs, decreased in 1983, while the total number of ward referrals consistently decreased over the period. This was probably due to the service's emphasis on assisting colleagues in other departments of the hospital in dealing with the emotional problems of their patients.
