This contribution is intended as an attempt to derive the so-called weak crossover phenomena from general principles governing scope assignment and linking of pronouns to referential expressions. It is argued that pronouns do not count as syntactic variables in the unmarked case, since they need not be linked to a c-commanding position in order to be interpreted as bound variables. It is further claimed that logical forms in which pronouns are directly linked to operators are ruled out by general principles of grammar

Abstract

This contribution is intended as an attempt to derive the so-called weak crossover phenomena from general principles governing scope assignment and linking of pronouns to referential expressions. It is argued that pronouns do not count as syntactic variables in the unmarked case, since they need not be linked to a c-commanding position in order to be interpreted as bound variables. It is further claimed that logical forms in which pronouns are directly linked to operators are ruled out by general principles of grammar
