This study explores the significance of gestures relating to saints in Counter-Reformation Italy. Focusing on the sign of the cross and the figure of Saint Francis of Paola, it shows that his recognised thaumaturgic role, as evidenced in the canonisation process and depicted in prints and paintings, played a key part in popularising his cult in the Republic of Venice at a time when making the sign of the cross and blessing others signified allegiance to the Catholic Church.
