Primers for Indigenous communities, Textbook analysis, Spanish lexicon, Summer Institute of Linguistics

This article analyses the treatment of the lexicon —with a focus on nouns— in the Spanish literacy primers and textbooks produced by the Summer Institute of Linguistics between the 40’s and the 90’s for indigenous communities in Mexican, Colombian and Peruvian areas. These booklets have received little attention from linguists and educational specialists. After briefly describing the context of literacy campaigns for the indigenous population, the article examines —from both a quantitative and qualitative point of view— the nouns included in the textbooks examined, classifying them according to categories of human life. Moreover, it explores the presence and functions of words of indigenous origin in the booklets. Among other aspects, the findings reveal some ideological dynamics and trends underlying the composition of the texts.
