The starting date of eugenics is usually traced back to 1883. However, practices of sex selection (with a preference for the male heir) and of determining the physical and mental traits of future children had already been theorized in Antiquity and later refined during the Siglo de Oro. The study examines medical theories developed between Spain and Italy, encompassing anatomy, gynaecology, recipe books, and early modern psychology, as well as their influence on contemporary utopian philosophy.
