This paper explores the reception of Jakob Böhme’s theosophy in Botho Strauß’s Beginnlosigkeit. In his critique of Gegenwartskultur (contemporary culture), Strauß seeks to recover a conception of art and poetry deeply rooted in mystical and sacred values. His engagement with Böhme thus serves both sociological and aesthetic purposes, forming a distinctive mode of cultural criticism. Beginnlosigkeit, part essay and part narrative, becomes the principal testing ground for this approach. It reflects on a cosmological concept reminiscent of Böhme’s Ungrund, developing its inquiry through figurative expression and assigning central importance to the theme of spiritual corporeality as the field of the divine-human interaction.
