This study describes and discusses the outcomes of a four-week pedagogical intervention designed to foster “reading for pleasure” among pupils with a migrant background who speak a heritage language at home and have Italian as their majority language, attending a summer camp. Although the benefits of reading on the development of linguistic and cognitive skills more generally are now well documented, its practice is not systematically integrated into school activities. Our project, which lasted four weeks, promoted the reading of a book (The BFG. The Big Friendly Giant by Roald Dahl) through an informal approach, involving the students in activities of creative appropriation of the text, with the main goal of conveying the pleasure of reading. The results of the questionnaires administered before and after the intervention, focusing on reading habits and the appreciation of the proposed activities, suggest that a free and enjoyable approach to reading can improve motivation for this activity, even in children with linguistic vulnerabilities and limited access to books at home, fostering the development of a positive relationship with books that can extend beyond the school context.
