Abstract

Characteristic element of the poetic landscape and central theme of his reflection, the countryside runs through Leopardi’s entire literary production, from the canzonette of his apprenticeship years to his last lyrical achievements; according to suggestions that derive both from the bucolic and georgic scenery, that from Theocritus and Virgil transits into the “rural” poetry of the 18th century, widely frequented by Leopardi and poured out in the poetic “Crestomazia” of 1828, both from the tendency to represent a nature increasingly perceived in its modern aspect, poised between fascination and destructiveness.
