The following essay aims to analyse the way in which the Italian “defascistization” has been narrated—that is, the process of removing fascists from public office, initiating criminal proceedings, and seizing their assets, which began after the fall of the regime and intensified at the end of the Second World War. The chosen perspective is that of the agents of this phenomenon, namely the “purgers,” those who were tasked with judging the past of others as representatives of the High Commission for Sanctions against Fascism, whether they were magistrates or politicians. Through the use of direct testimonies and confidential investigations, along with the necessary contextual elements, this essay will seek to understand the reasons behind a substantially negative perception of a phenomenon that lies at the foundation of the Italian Republic.
