Studies focusing on the cultural dimension in language teaching have generally neglected metacultural competence. This paper deals with this « meta » aspect for French language teaching in its close relationship with metalexical skills, which are a key element in lexicocentric approaches. The development of metacultural competence is also based here on the use of digital corpora, according to the hypothesis that this type of online resource is likely to stimulate the reflection on both lexical-semantic and cultural phenomena. A pilot experiment is described in which the DIACOM-fr corpus was used as part of a training course for prospective teachers aimed at increasing metacultural competence through the use of authentic corpus data.
