This paper aims to analyse five supposed occurrences of ‘metrical tmesis’ in Pindar, i.e. the separation of a verb from its preverb by verse-end: Ol. 1, 57, ὑπερ- / κρέμασε; 6, 53, ἐγ- / κέκρυ- πτο; Pyth. 4, 211, ἀν- / ήλυθον; Isthm. 3, 18, ἐξ- / άλλαξεν (with Bacchyl. Ep. 5, 74, ἐξ- / είλετο); Isthm. 6, 8, κατα- / σπένδειν. These passages are reconsidered in order to understand this ‘poetic licence’ in the light of its performative implications, Pindar’s style, and Homeric antecedents.
