The aim of this paper is to offer an overview on the development of family law in the People’s Republic of China. Many changes have occurred in the Chinese society in the last century and the family has been affected by those transformations: the State by means of law has remolded the relations between family members building a new idea of family according to the government’s policy. This decision has been done due to the strong interdependence between society stability and family stability. Furthermore the legislator has made plenty of efforts to enhance the protection of women’s rights as a wife and as a mother, i.e. in divorce, property, domestic violence related issues.
