It is common knowledge that the improper consumption of alcohol is one of the most challenging issues worldwide representing a threat for the society. For this reason, the objective assessment of alcohol misuse is crucial to protect health and safety, particularly in clinical, occupational and traffic contexts. The present work aims at reporting on the history and standardisation process of one of the most commonly employed alcohol consumption biomarkers, namely carbohydrate deficient transferrin (CDT). Moreover, the importance of such biomarker in traffic medicine is highlighted considering the recent reports on its association with the occurrence of alcohol-related road traffic accidents.

Abstract
It is common knowledge that the improper consumption of alcohol is one of the most challenging issues worldwide representing a threat for the society. For this reason, the objective assessment of alcohol misuse is crucial to protect health and safety, particularly in clinical, occupational and traffic contexts. The present work aims at reporting on the history and standardisation process of one of the most commonly employed alcohol consumption biomarkers, namely carbohydrate deficient transferrin (CDT). Moreover, the importance of such biomarker in traffic medicine is highlighted considering the recent reports on its association with the occurrence of alcohol-related road traffic accidents.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
