Used 1975-1984 drug sales data for Italy to examine national trends in psychotropic drug use. Results indicate annual increases in the sales of antidepressants, minor tranquilizers, and, to a lesser extent, neuroleptics. Regional variations in psychotropic drug use were found in an examination of 1983-1984 data. The results emphasize the need to consider the phenomenon of psychotropic drug use in a context that extends beyond the clinical setting to include broader social, economic, and political perspectives. Abstract
