In the early thirteenth century the municipal palace of Avignon, with its imposing central tower, represented the strength of the commune, which prided itself on its independence from other powers. Based on an analysis of the sources and an examination of the site, an article in our current issue analyses the history and architecture of the building. Significantly, the palace can be compared to other municipal buildings located, like Avignon, in the German Empire, especially in smaller towns.
