Abstract

Romance speakers acquiring German L2 seem to follow the same stages that characterize the diachronic development of English in a specular direction. The simple observation that the word order pattern *SVOVf is attested neither in German L2 acquisition process nor in the history of English language represents a strong argument in favour of the hypothesis that L2 acquisition obeys UG principles.
