The Abbey of San Salvatore di Tolla is located in the Piacenza Apennines and represents one of the oldest monastic structures in the area. Despite the importance of the site, for a long period the area was covered by dense woods which hid the ruins of the monastery. Only in recent years (2017- 2019) several archaeological excavations have allowed the understanding of the organization of the monastery (a church with three different phases in use between the 12th and 18th centuries, as well as traces of early medieval occupation 9th-11th centuries). This article presents the results of the archaeological excavations, discusses the future prospects of the research and outlines the decisions made for the restoration of the discovered structures.

Abstract
The Abbey of San Salvatore di Tolla is located in the Piacenza Apennines and represents one of the oldest monastic structures in the area. Despite the importance of the site, for a long period the area was covered by dense woods which hid the ruins of the monastery. Only in recent years (2017- 2019) several archaeological excavations have allowed the understanding of the organization of the monastery (a church with three different phases in use between the 12th and 18th centuries, as well as traces of early medieval occupation 9th-11th centuries). This article presents the results of the archaeological excavations, discusses the future prospects of the research and outlines the decisions made for the restoration of the discovered structures.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
