This articles aims to trace both the (indirect) biographical and the intellectual connections between Friedrich Hölderlin and Georg Forster. In so doing, it provides a fresh insight into one of the mostly disputed scholarly dichotomies of late eighteenth-century German culture: philosophy and aesthetic education vs direct political action.
