Jacques Brez fra storiografia, teologia e scienze naturali attraverso la sua corrispondenza inedita (1790-1796)

The author dwells on the stay in Holland of the Enlightenment Waldensian pastor Jacques Brez, using as a source his unpublished correspondences with the Protestant savants Jean Senebier and Jean-Henri van Swinden, as well as with the heads of the Comité vaudois of the Walloon Churches. By cross-referencing these correspondences with the re-reading of the works published by Brez and with the manuscripts of his unpublished works, the reasons for the conflict that opposed him on the one hand to the Walloon Committee and on the other to the Waldensian Board emerge clearly. Profoundly influenced by Rousseau's thought, Brez rereads the history of the ancient Waldensians, exalting their sobriety and simple virtues and distancing himself from the theologians of the Reformation. Hence the accusation of heterodoxy picked up on him by the Dutch pastors.

L’autore si sofferma sul soggiorno neerlandese del pastore valdese illuminista Jacques Brez, uti-lizzando come fonte le sue inedite corrispondenzee con i savants protestanti Jean Senebier e Jean-Henri van Swinden, oltre che con i responsabili del Comité vaudois delle Chiese vallone. Incrociando questi carteggi con la rilettura delle opere pubblicate da Brez e con i manoscritti dei suoi inediti emergono con evidenza le ragioni che conflitto che lo opposero da un lato al Comitato vallone e dall’altro alla Tavola valdese. Pro-fondamente influenzato dal pensiero di Rousseau, Brez rilegge infatti la storia degli antichi valdesi esal-tandone la sobrietà e le semplici virtù e prendendo le distanze dai teologi della Riforma. Di qui l’accusa di eterodossia ricoltagli dai pastori neerlandesi.
