n enacting Regulation (EU) No 2019/1381, the EUfinalisedthe reform of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Thisreform is the result of long-standing discussions, particularly brought forward by civil society. EFSA was established in 2002 by Regulation (EC) No 178/2002 and raised immediate criticism in several respects, includingthe overall suitability of its contribution to risk communication. Oneyear after the reform –which came intoforce on 26 March 2021 –,the CoViD-19 pandemic burst out. Contradictory reactions of national authorities soon ensued. The article purports to reflect on the appropriateness of this reform to equip EFSA with the right tools to face similar crises, which in the future may have an even closer link with the food sector.
