This paper intends to develop some outcomes of the research carried out by the Verona team within the framework of the PRIN RESERVES project aimed at exploring the school-community collaboration that foster civic engagement. After an in-depth examination of the concept of civic and social commitment that reveals its complexity and multidisciplinary nature and a brief examination of the ministerial regulations, the authors will focus on the perspective of school principals and teachers – investigated through a multi-case study in seven educational institutions, from primary schools to the Provincial Centre for Adult Education (CPIA) – on the development of civic engagement namely i) prerequisites for training in civic and social engagement and ii) acting as a place that signifies civic and social engagement
