In this contribution, the Author recovers the analysis carried out in previous writings dedicated to the figure of Giovanni Ioviano Pontano and concentrates the examination on the moral treatise De prudentia, recovering directly from the text some useful elements to justify Pontano’s role as a thinker who inaugurated the modernity of the conception of the ‘State’, distinguishing prudentia from sapientia and declining prudence in the practice of government.
