This review deals with Sara Parini's book, which reconstructs the events that led the Scotsman John Law to play a leading role in the European economy and in particular in the French economy at the end of the 1710s, giving rise to a reckless experiment that made him famous, powerful and rich before reaching the ruinous collapse that traumatically ended his adventure. These events are well known to specialists in economic history, but they are certainly also interesting and instructive for legal historians and jurists in general, in the face of recurring crises in the financial markets also caused by the lack of adequate legal regulations.

Abstract

This review deals with Sara Parini's book, which reconstructs the events that led the Scotsman John Law to play a leading role in the European economy and in particular in the French economy at the end of the 1710s, giving rise to a reckless experiment that made him famous, powerful and rich before reaching the ruinous collapse that traumatically ended his adventure. These events are well known to specialists in economic history, but they are certainly also interesting and instructive for legal historians and jurists in general, in the face of recurring crises in the financial markets also caused by the lack of adequate legal regulations.
