Muret, a great orator in Counter-Reformation Rome and lecturer at the Sapienza University, was one of the leading figures in the rediscovery of Tacitus, an author neglected until the middle of the 16th century in favour of other Roman historians such as Livy, Sallust and Valerius Maximus. Muret obtained a university lectureship on the Annales in the 1660s. At the same time, he devoted himself to the philological analysis of the text, with a view to the critical edition of Tacitus' work, which was later to be completed by Justus Lipsius, somewhat of a pupil and follower of Muret.
Muret, grande oratore nella Roma della Controriforma e docente alla Sapienza, è stato uno dei protagonisti della riscoperta di Tacito, autore trascurato fino al pieno XVI secolo a favore di altri storici romani quali Livio, Sallustio e Valerio Massimo. Muret ottiene di tenere corsi universitari sugli Annales negli anni Sessanta del Cinquecento. Al contempo si dedica alla analisi filologica del testo, in vista della edizione critica dell'opera di Tacito, che sarà poi compiuta da Giusto Lipsio, in qualche modo allievo e seguace di Muret.
