In this conversation, the interviewee retraces the main steps of his work, from the initial historiographical production, carried out within what he calls social ideology, to the studies on the philosophy of Benedetto Croce. Cultural autobiography is intertwined with a reconsideration of the trends that have marked an entire era of Italian intellectual life. Thus we touch on the question of the presence of Marxism, dominant up to a certain moment, thanks to the wise use of Gramsci's thought, and of the ideal crisis following the fall of the historical foundations of that ideology.
