I provide a new edition of an 11th century epigraph, now preserved in the Museum “G.B. Cavalcaselle” in Verona but found in the monastery of Badia Calavena; there it is written that the bishop of Verona Walterio had built a castle «from the foundations». I evaluate the historical and archaeological elements in favor of the traditional interpretation, which identifies this castle with that of Badia Calavena, and put forward a new hypothesis, that it is rather that of Cogollo (Tregnago).

Abstract

I provide a new edition of an 11th century epigraph, now preserved in the Museum “G.B. Cavalcaselle” in Verona but found in the monastery of Badia Calavena; there it is written that the bishop of Verona Walterio had built a castle «from the foundations». I evaluate the historical and archaeological elements in favor of the traditional interpretation, which identifies this castle with that of Badia Calavena, and put forward a new hypothesis, that it is rather that of Cogollo (Tregnago).
