Nietzsche’s Book The Birth of Tragedy with his conception of the Dionysian myth influenced decisively the young Hofmannsthal, as it appears in many moments of his lyric and dramatic production. This study analyses the Bacchantinnen-Project at which Hofmannsthal worked intermittently from 1892 to 1918 without reaching a conclusion. Just about thirty notes of that project are left and according to them it is possible to reconstruct elements of the plot, of the characters (Pentheus, Agave) and of the dramaturgical aims. Hofmannsthal’s purpose was to realize a ‘Dionysian’ drama in Nietzsche’s sense, namely a play built around the central subject of the identity-disintegration and the loss of the principium individuationis.

Abstract
Nietzsche’s Book The Birth of Tragedy with his conception of the Dionysian myth influenced decisively the young Hofmannsthal, as it appears in many moments of his lyric and dramatic production. This study analyses the Bacchantinnen-Project at which Hofmannsthal worked intermittently from 1892 to 1918 without reaching a conclusion. Just about thirty notes of that project are left and according to them it is possible to reconstruct elements of the plot, of the characters (Pentheus, Agave) and of the dramaturgical aims. Hofmannsthal’s purpose was to realize a ‘Dionysian’ drama in Nietzsche’s sense, namely a play built around the central subject of the identity-disintegration and the loss of the principium individuationis.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
