Although widespread SARS-CoV-2 screening in asymptomatic populations is unwarranted and perhaps unjustified for many social, economic, and diagnostic reasons, the rate of asymptomatic surgical patients is not always meaningless in low prevalence scenarios, especially when combined with a highly vulnerable setting. Efficient testing protocols are essential to reducing the risk of intrahospital outbreaks and protecting the most vulnerable patients (i.e. immunocompromised, elderly), and may be essential in the face of rapidly spreading novel SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs).
