The essay examines the relationship between Lévinas and Hegel. In Totality and Infinity Lévinas embraces Rosenzweig's criticisms of Hegel and criticizes the primacy of totality with respect to the otherness of infinity. But Hegel, and in particular the Phenomenology of the Spirit, remains present in Lévinas' thought as a reference term, up to the last lessons on God, death and time.
