Abstract: Recent researches and new discoveries have shown some critical aspects of the inscriptions engraved on the milestones found in the Italian regio VII (Etruria). A new analysis of these milestones is therefore necessary. In this paper we propose that two milestones, placed among the “falsae” by Eugen Bormann (CIL XI 848 * and CIL XI 849 *), are genuine, while we expunge the inscription CIL XI 6665a from the milestones, because it is a nota lapicidinarum on a block of marble from Luni quarries. Finally, of the five new milestones, edited after the publication of the CIL XI (1901), we take into consideration three milestones of republican age from Vulci, Orbetello and Lucus Feroniae. The complex problems concerning the road network of northern and coastal Etruria, where some of these milestones are placed, are also examined here. Consequently not only the consular roads (Via Aurelia nova / vetus, Via Aemilia Scauri, Via Quinctia), but also the viae minores are considered.
