In this article, I have proposed that there are instances of negation that are valued at the interpretive interface. This entails that these negations have a head-status syntactically and that they, though not interpreted as a standard sentential negation, can scopally interact with other negative elements realized in the same structure. I also proposed that this negation (optionally realized phonologically in some languages) is nothing else that the hidden sentential negation advocated by C&P for FC-structures. My analysis lends thus support to C&P’s analysis of negation and any-phrases. It also shows that alleged ‘expletive’ negation is not an outlandish PF-phenomenon but is deeply rooted in the properties of the interpretative systems for natural language.

Abstract
In this article, I have proposed that there are instances of negation that are valued at the interpretive interface. This entails that these negations have a head-status syntactically and that they, though not interpreted as a standard sentential negation, can scopally interact with other negative elements realized in the same structure. I also proposed that this negation (optionally realized phonologically in some languages) is nothing else that the hidden sentential negation advocated by C&P for FC-structures. My analysis lends thus support to C&P’s analysis of negation and any-phrases. It also shows that alleged ‘expletive’ negation is not an outlandish PF-phenomenon but is deeply rooted in the properties of the interpretative systems for natural language.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
