The essay deals with the issue of censorship and censorial practices in the Republic of Venice between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Through the analysis of the documents of the Venetian Holy Office, the limits of the possibilities of control over the circulation of prohibited books are defined and, at the same time, the main areas of production of the book and the contexts of reading are identified.
