«I was not happy in the midst of the snow, and to hear the ‘ta–pum’»: with these simple words from his war memoirs written from January 1920, the veteran Domenico Zaltron, a farmer originally from Schio (Vicenza), recalled a sense of want, affliction and uncertainty he experienced during his first contact with the coarse of the conflict, attempted in the snowy woods of the Asiago plateau on March 1916. Zaltron’s narration focuses on the most tragic moments of the Italian military campaign, from the Strafexpedition between May and June 1916 to the Caporetto retreat between October and November 1917, which was characterized by chaotic withdrawals and pathetic marches under bombardments.
