This paper aims at checking how the Greeks of Asia Minor considered the passage of Alexander the Great. A range of elements are taken into consideration, as the lack of an “Alexander era”, the physical presence or absence of the young king into the poleis, the real traces of an Alexander cult before his death, the existence of fourth century historians who choose the conquest of Asia as a chronological point of passage, etc. Actually the signs of continuity are more numerous and strong, both in Alexander’s behavior and in the whole attitude of the Greeks. It is very difficult to find evidence of the awareness of a great changement.

Abstract

This paper aims at checking how the Greeks of Asia Minor considered the passage of Alexander the Great. A range of elements are taken into consideration, as the lack of an “Alexander era”, the physical presence or absence of the young king into the poleis, the real traces of an Alexander cult before his death, the existence of fourth century historians who choose the conquest of Asia as a chronological point of passage, etc. Actually the signs of continuity are more numerous and strong, both in Alexander’s behavior and in the whole attitude of the Greeks. It is very difficult to find evidence of the awareness of a great changement.
