Fashion is a multifaceted phenomenon that needs to be studied from multiple perspectives using a variety of methods and theoretical and conceptual frameworks. The essays collected in this focus section seek to explore the protean ways in which clothing performs in literature and popular culture, absorbing and retaining the effects of political power and articulating the subjectivities and aesthetic characteristics of a given culture. The contributors to this special issue consider different approaches to the relationship between fashion, dress and the body and offer analyses that cover different historical periods and take into consideration multiple forms of language and of discourse, from literature to cinema and theatre, from law to augmented reality.
