Following the paradigm set by Boccaccio, the novella by Franco Sacchetti (1332-1400) attempt to imitate the languages and dialects of their various characters. The text’s manuscript transmission does not always reflect such imitation accurately, and the copyists tend to omit or simplify several local traits: thus, many of the passages affected may shed light on the process of transcription and publication of the text, and prove useful for the reconstruction attempted in a forthcoming critical edition.
