The essay aims at analyzing some crucial features of modern individualism and their connection to both democracy and its contemporary crisis. In order to rescue democracy from its participatory and institutional crisis it is undergoing, one needs to go back to the political anthropology of modern politics and analyze its gendered features. Political theory needs to take into account other forms of subjectivity, in order to imagine also different forms of political affiliation and community. The feminist perspective can offer an interesting theoretical challenge to contemporary democratic theory.

Abstract
