In this contribution we discuss the formation of the personal endings of the singular for the category 'middle'. Reading through some of the most widely available handbooks about Proto-Indo-European, it seems evident that the reconstruction of the historical personal endings of the 'middle' lacks a uniform consensus. The different points of view cover the chronological morphology, the original function and formation during or after the unitary phase of these markers. We try to sketch a clarifying hypothesis confirming a non-uniform chronological reconstruction of the 'middle' which requires a stratified picture of PIE also for the functional values of the category that reaches its full morphology only in the historically attested languages.

Abstract
In this contribution we discuss the formation of the personal endings of the singular for the category 'middle'. Reading through some of the most widely available handbooks about Proto-Indo-European, it seems evident that the reconstruction of the historical personal endings of the 'middle' lacks a uniform consensus. The different points of view cover the chronological morphology, the original function and formation during or after the unitary phase of these markers. We try to sketch a clarifying hypothesis confirming a non-uniform chronological reconstruction of the 'middle' which requires a stratified picture of PIE also for the functional values of the category that reaches its full morphology only in the historically attested languages.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
