Many commentators have recognised elements of both courtly life and the liturgy in Dante's Purgatorio. This essay attempts to outline the atmosphere of Princes' Valley (Purg. VII-VIII), a 'locus amoenus' described in terms of both courtly space, with its aesthetics and entertainment, and pious rituals of contrition and prayer, underlined by hymns of the liturgy. The praise of the Malaspina family must be read in such a context, which combines the souls' progress in purgation with issues of courtly ethics and individual prowess.

Abstract

Many commentators have recognised elements of both courtly life and the liturgy in Dante's Purgatorio. This essay attempts to outline the atmosphere of Princes' Valley (Purg. VII-VIII), a 'locus amoenus' described in terms of both courtly space, with its aesthetics and entertainment, and pious rituals of contrition and prayer, underlined by hymns of the liturgy. The praise of the Malaspina family must be read in such a context, which combines the souls' progress in purgation with issues of courtly ethics and individual prowess.
