This paper aims at investigating the acquisition of case morphology in L2 Russian. The hypotheses here introduced are based on Processability Theory (Pienemann, 1998), which claims that learners move through universal stages of acquisition. My hypotheses on L2 Russian are tested on a group of 15 learners with different L1 backgrounds and levels of proficiency. The analysis of their oral production confirms the developmental hypotheses. In addition, this paper investigates the sequence in which cases are acquired at the phrasal procedure stage, the stage that introduces the highest variety of case-marked structures.

Abstract

This paper aims at investigating the acquisition of case morphology in L2 Russian. The hypotheses here introduced are based on Processability Theory (Pienemann, 1998), which claims that learners move through universal stages of acquisition. My hypotheses on L2 Russian are tested on a group of 15 learners with different L1 backgrounds and levels of proficiency. The analysis of their oral production confirms the developmental hypotheses. In addition, this paper investigates the sequence in which cases are acquired at the phrasal procedure stage, the stage that introduces the highest variety of case-marked structures.
