In the Renaissance, the cities were a metaphor for human life and community and they acted as guarantors of cultural continuity. Today, contemporary cities are fractals, characterized by a melting pot, not only cultural, but also functional, which overlaps in urban spaces generating new social conflicts and force the representative of the genius loci to cover marginal spaces within of the city. Founding principles of buen vivir and of the International Cittaslow Movement are the strengthen of social cohesion, the discover of local traditions, the claim of urban spaces on which to rebuild a sense of community and to give value of slowness. South American cities and the cities of the Cittaslow International Network have implemented governance policies for local planning that put citizens at the center in accordance with the founding traditions for a better quality of life.
