The treatment of the full stage of the apallic syndrome, which can at times be very protracted, is based on several factors: An appropriate and intense psychomotor rehabilitation (Gerstenbrand, 1968a), a special hypercaloric diet, and the choice of a drug therapy which will induce and maintain the best possible conditions for the resumption of cerebral functions. Drugs which may be useful in the therapy of the protracted stages of coma are summarized in Table 1.
