The paper examines Smeraldo Smeraldi’s cartographic works and focuses on the role of the engineer in defining the geographic image of the Farnese state.With the aim of offering insight into the modus operandi of this statesman – the most talented cartographer of the area – the paper analyses the critical historiographical views about the relationship between technical accuracy and political position of Smeraldi’s maps, as well as his border maps and reports, providing an original geographical analysis of the documents.
