The Myth of Nergal and Ereškigal - preserved in two versions, a Middle-Babylonian one from Tell el-Amarna (sec. XIV BCE)and a longer Standard Babylonian one from the Neo-Assyrian site of Sultantepe dated to the early first millennium BCE - tells the story of the god Nergal's descent to the netherworld and his marriage with Ereškigal queen of the realm of death. This volume provides a reconstruction of the Standard Babylonian version (which is given in cuneiform and in an up-to-date transliteration and translation, with a critical apparatus). The volume includes an introduction with an edition of the Amarna version and an extensive study of the god Nergal in Assyrian sources; a philological commentary, and a glossary and sign list.
